The Charity Guild of Catholic Women began by sewing baby layettes for needy children at the Mexican Mission Clinic, later known as San Jose Clinic. Established the same year as the Guild, the Clinic has always been a major beneficiary of funding.
In 1953, Charity Guild began a resale shop with 2 goals: to raise more funds to contribute to San Jose Clinic and other charitable organizations that serve children and to provide quality merchandise to families unable to afford high prices in retail stores.
Each year some 15,000 individuals shop at Lovett Street, providing affordable goods to the needy or the bargain-hunter. Consignors also benefit from shop sales, receiving more than $500,000 in additional income in 2008. Another benefit is the re-cycling feature that the re-sale offers as goods transfer from one home to another.
To keep up with demand, the Guild has begun a capital campaign to add 15,000 square feet to its 19,800 square foot current facility. Today, the Guild must turn away quality merchandise, especially furniture, because of lack of space. The first phase of purchasing the land for $1.2 million is complete. The second phase including design and building is $3.2 million. With each square foot, the Charity Guild is building for the future and the families and children who need their help.
